Halstead Teens Help Shape a Healthier Future with Tobacco-Free Parks Policy

by Aline Albrecht, Harvey County Health Department

The Halstead City Council approved a Tobacco-Free Parks policy for its community at its Sept. 22 meeting following presentations from Mirror’s STAND Halstead youth group members with support from the Harvey County Health Department.
The non-punitive policy supports community health by reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, setting positive examples for youth and keeping shared spaces clean and welcoming.

“The Tobacco-Free Parks policy was a big moment for me,” said Russell Schroeder, one of the STAND presenters at the meeting. “Previously, I had never done something like this. I think this policy was important to pass, because it shows young children that it’s not OK or normal to use tobacco products.

“I also believe that in the Halstead community we set the standard extremely high for everything, and that’s important for us to be successful. Furthermore, I’m just glad that I get to be a part of bettering the community. I’m ready for round two.”Cigarette butts are the most frequently littered item in United States waterways. Research shows that smokers litter 47% of the cigarette butts they smoke.

Beyond litter, children exposed to tobacco smoke face higher risks of asthma, ear infections, respiratory illness and sudden infant death syndrome.

“I think the tobacco-free parks are a great thing for Halstead. It will help set a good standard for the community and especially the younger kids,” said Piper Morgan, who also presented for STAND at the meeting. “I think setting that standard is important, and I’m proud to be a part of making my community a healthier place.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that communities support clean-air and smoke-free environments where children live, learn, work and play – including parks, child care settings, housing, beaches, sidewalks and sporting arenas – even when children are not present.

By lifting up youth voices and public health data, Halstead has taken a step toward creating safer, cleaner and healthier parks, trails and recreational spaces for all residents and visitors.
