Highlights from the 2025 KALHD Mid-Year Meeting: Connection, Leadership, and Collaboration

Local Health Department staff and leaders from across Kansas came together for the 2025 Kansas Association of Local Health Departments (KALHD) Public Health Data Day and Mid-Year Meeting on June 23–25 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Manhattan.

Public Health Data Day (June 23) brought local health department staff  together for hands-on Excel training, real-world examples, and shared learning. From budgeting and immunization tracking to grants and vouchers, Data Day showed how Excel can support both clinical and administrative work—while building stronger connections across the field.

Participants praised the event’s practical takeaways, engaging facilitation, and approachable tone. “I took away so many useful tips and tricks I’ll be applying right away in my daily work,” shared one attendee. Another noted, “Loved Spreadsheet Smarts!!”

The KALHD Mid-Year Meeting (June 24-25) hosted 97 participants from counties across Kansas. The event focused on timely topics that support effective leadership, community impact, and the adaptive challenges faced by local health department leaders.

The agenda featured sessions on key issues like communicating with county commissioners, preparing for public health emergencies, navigating HR challenges, and workplace wellness. A strategy session on moving from stakeholder mapping to mobilization offered tools for turning ideas into action. Participants especially appreciated the engaging talk of how they can be seen as the public health champions for Kansas.

Attendees also received the results of the 2025 State Formula Survey and explored partnership opportunities between Local Health Departments (LHD) and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). Closing out the second day, the KALHD business meeting helped set the course for the months ahead. Continuing education credits were provided by WSU Conference Office.

Evaluations were overwhelmingly positive, with attendees calling it one of their favorite meetings of the year. Comments praised the quality of speakers and relevance of the sessions. “It was a great conference, and I learned a lot. I definitely came up with things I need to learn more about in my new role,” said one attendee. Another said, “Bring Dr. McKenney Back – she was great!”

Thanks to the work of the KALHD Executive Director and the eight planning team members who are leaders at their local health departments. The Wichita State University (WSU) Conference Office and WSU Community Engagement Institute Center for Public Health Initiatives supported their work. The 2025 KALHD Public Health Data Day and Mid-Year Meeting successfully blended learning, leadership, and community.
